Amateur Baseball: State Class C Tournament set

AVON -- Following action in the Region 8C Tournament Sunday, Aug. 4, the field of four teams to represent the region in the State Class C Tournament has been set, but their seedings are yet to be determined.

Nisswa, Fort Ripley, Avon and Buckman will advance to the state tournament that begins Friday, Aug. 16 in Maple Lake, Delano and Dassel-Cokato.

Nisswa defeated Fort Ripley 6-5 to advance to the Region 8C championship game Sunday, Aug. 11 in Avon. Buckman beat St. Stephen 4-1 and Avon edged the Pierz Bulldogs 3-1 in elimination/state play-in games.

Buckman will play Avon 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 in Avon and the winner of that game will face Fort Ripley at 4 p.m. to see who advances to the Sunday’s title game 1 p.m. game against Nisswa.

Nisswa 6, Fort Ripley 5

AVON -- Aaron Jenkins singled home the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh for the Nisswa Lighting who advanced to the Region 8C title game with a 6-5 win over the Fort Ripley Rebels in the winners bracket Sunday, Aug. 4.


Trailing 5-4 after six, the Lightning rallied to tie the game on back-to-back doubles by Drew Boland and Jeremiah Piepkorn. Jenkins’ one-out single plated Piepkorn and Kyle Schaible held the Rebels scoreless as he tossed the final three innings to earn a save.

Eric Bolt picked up the win. He pitched the middle three innings and allowed one run on four hits in relief of starter Scott Sand.

Nisswa grabbed on early 4-0 in the first with RBI singles from Jenkins and Tory Miller, a sacrifice fly and an error.

Fort Ripley got two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single from Brad Waytashek and tied the game in fourth with a Bill Sather RBI single and Waytashek sacrifice fly.

The Rebels took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Waytashek laced a two-double to left center for his fourth RBI of the game.

Avon 3, Pierz Bulldogs 1

AVON -- Matt Pichelmann tossed a complete game three-hitter for the Avon Lakers who eliminated the Pierz Bulldogs 3-1 to earn a berth in the Class C State Tournament in an elimination bracket game Sunday, Aug. 4.

Losing pitcher Austin Dickmann also pitched a complete game and collected two of the Bulldog’s three hits including a double. Skip Toops drove in the only Pierz run with a seventh-inning single.

Caleb Curry was the only Avon player with multiple hits. He finished 2-3 with an RBI and a sacrifice fly. The Lakers other two runs came on a two-run double by Taylor Holthaus.

Buckman 4, St. Stephen 1

AVON -- Buckman drafted Chad Weiss from the Pierz Lakers following the division playoffs and he rewarded the Billygoats with a 14 strikeout, no-walk, complete-game effort to defeat the St. Stephen Steves 4-1 in a Region 8C elimination bracket game Sunday, Aug. 4.

The victory guarantees Buckman its third straight trip to the Class C State Tournament.

Lane Girtz and Matt Kummet both went 2-4 for the Billygoats. Kummet drove in two runs and Girtz scored twice and stole two bases.

Aaron Weber broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single in the eighth. Matt Tautges went hitless but walked three times, scored a run and stole three bases.
