COLD SPRING - Chad Weiss worked seven innings and was 2-5 at the plate with a double and three RBIs for the Region 8C Lastrup Lakers who defeated the 13B Fairmont Martins 5-4 in the opening round of the Minnesota Class C state tournament Sunday night.
Weiss struck out five, walked one and gave up eight hits and four runs, three earned, to get the win before giving up the mound in the bottom of the eighth to Brad Meyer who retired all six batters he faced to earn a save.
Lastrup jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Rick Schlieman who later scored on a fielder's choice by Meyer.
Brandon Lochner singled in the second and scored on Weiss' double that put the Lakers up 3-0 before Fairmont narrowed the gap with runs in the second and fifth innings. Weiss drove in the final two Lastrup runs with a sixth-inning single.
Two errors and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh and led to two more Fairmont runs, but Weiss got out of the inning with the Laker lead intact.
