Area Baseball: Cardinals win first two games of season

STAPLES - Eric Kossan picked up two wins, one in relief, to give the Staples-Motley Cardinals their first wins of the season, 8-7 and 9-7 over the Crosby-Ironton Rangers in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader Thursday.

Kossan pitched the final two innings of Game One and was 3-4 at the plate. Tyler Winkels went 3-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs and three RBIs.

In Game Two, Kossan pitched a complete game and had an RBI.

For the Rangers, who have lost nine straight, Matt Stangel had two hits in Game One and Josh Maucieri drove in two runs. In Game Two, Jake Larson was 3-4 with two RBIs and Daniel Hudrlik and Andrew Moore added two hits apiece. Larson, Stangel and Moore each drove in two runs.

Patriots sweep Park Rapids


PEQUOT LAKES - Karl Satterlund singled in Chad Christianson with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pequot Lakes Patriots a 6-5 victory in the first game of their Mid-State Conference doubleheader with Park Rapids Thursday.

Christianson finished 2-3 with two RBIs while winning pitcher Austin Mesenbrink and Kody Kettleson contributed doubles.

In Game Two, the Patriots were outhit 12-6, but made the most of their chances to pull out a 5-4 win.

Justin Olson went 3-4 with a double and two runs scored and Christianson added his second double of the day.

Austin Mesenbrink picked up the win on the mound in the opener and Connor Davich pitched all seven innings in the nightcap.

AITKIN - Aitkin senior Jake Lynn went 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs while pitching four innings striking out nine and allowing just three hits and one unearned run in the Gobblers' 10-3 win over Hinckley-Finlayson in a Great River Conference game Thursday.

Jacob Hyytinen was 1-3 with a triple and Jeb Sanford pitched three innings in relief striking out four and allowing two runs for the unbeaten Gobblers.

Pierz sweeps Kimball

PIERZ - Cody Meyer was the pitcher of record in both games and had a solid day at the plate in both games as well to lead the Pierz Pioneers past Kimball 11-1 and 15-1 in a Central Minnesota Conference doubleheader Thursday.

Meyer was 2-3 in the opener and pitched all five innings striking out six while allowing five hits.

Teddy Dehler went 3-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Matt Kummet was 2-3 with a double.

In the nightcap, Meyer was 2-2 with three RBIs and again got the win pitching the first two innings.

Noah Boser was 3-4 with a double, triple amd six RBIs while Matt Tautges finished 2-3 with a double and six RBIs.

SEBEKA - The Pillager Huskies won both games of a Park Region Conference doubleheader at Sebeka Thursday.

Ridge Hunstad was 3-3 with four RBIs to lead the Huskies to an 18-5 win in Game One while Zach Forsberg was 2-5 with three RBIs.

In Game Two Bryan Mason went 2-2 with two RBIs as Pillager won 12-5.
