Area Baseball: Gobblers win 2 by matching scores

Nine baseball teams opened section play.

COHASSET — Jake Ince went 2-3 with a double and three RBIs for the No. 2 Aitkin Gobblers driving in an 11-1 victory against the No. 10 Greenway Raiders in the 7-2A quarterfinals Tuesday, June 1.

Jackson MacDonald collected a double with one run and one RBI. Hunter Hills walked three times and scored three times.

Carson Kullhem was the winning pitcher. He went 4.1 innings and struck out four. He allowed one run on four hits and four walks.

In an 11-1 opening-round victory over No. 15 Moose Lake-Willow River, Ince was 2-2 with a double, two runs and four RBIs, Caiden Kjelstrom was 3-4 with three runs scored. Owen Miller went 2-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs and Hunter Hills drove in three runs.

Landon Janzen and Logan Olson both had two hits for the Gobblers.

Zack Ehnstrom pitched the complete-game victory. He struck out eight over five innings. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks.

Pine River-Backus 9, Laporte 0

PINE RIVER — Irvin Tulenchik tallied a double, two runs and two RBIs to lead the No. 3 seeded Pine River-Backus Tigers to a 9-0 win over the No. 6 seeded Laporte Wildcats Tuesday, June 1, in the Section 5-1A opening round.

Trevor Redding finished 2-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Nolan Olivier, Konnor King and Chance Abraham all finished with two hits.

Ryder Compton was the winning pitcher. He struck out two, walked three and allowed just one hit and no runs in 5.2 innings.

WADENA — Wadena-Deer Creek’s Tony Kreklau went 4-4 with four RBIs and two runs for the No. 2 Wolverines as they beat the No. 7 seeded Ottertail Central Bulldogs 12-2 in the Section 8-2A opening round Tuesday, June 1.

Connor Davis and Isaac Hamann were each 3-4 with Hamann, Josh Dykhoff and Zach Shaw each recording a double for the Wolverines.

PIERZ — Pierz’s Kamden Happke went 3-4 with two RBIs and four runs for the No. 4 Pioneers as they beat No. 13 Osakis Tuesday, June 1 in Section 6-2A’s opening round.

Andrew Winscher went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jeremy Bingesser was 2-3 with a run and two RBIs and Andrew Winscher was 2-3 with two RBIs and a run for Pierz.

Winscher and Jonah Prokott combined for six strikeouts and just one hit and one walk.

Matt Filippi also hit a double and tallied two runs. Zach Gwost scored three runs and Collin Kray was 2-3 with a run.

ELY — Crosby-Ironton’s Conner Zender ripped a home run for the No. 12 Crosby-Ironton Rangers as they fell 8-7 to No. 5 Eveleth-Gilbert Tuesday, June 1, in

Section 7-2A’s opening round.

Carter Holtzleicer went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Gabe Kramer went 3-4 with a double and a triple for the Rangers who ended their season 7-13.

ST. CLOUD — Pillager’s Elijah Miller went 2-2 as the No. 11 seeded Huskies fell 10-0 to the No. 6 seeded St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders in Section 6-2A’s opening round Tuesday, June 1.

Blake Clark added a double for the Huskies who finished their season 5-16 overall.

COHASSET — Caden Nelson tallied two hits for the seventh-seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots in their 5-0 loss to 10th-seeded Greenway Tuesday, June 1, in the Section 7-2A opening round.

Clay Erickson pitched a complete game for the Patriots and allowed six hits.
