Area Baseball: Pierz battles, but falls to Cathedral

PIERZ--David Skiba drove in Aaron Weber, who finished 2-for-3, for the lone Pierz Pioneers run in Friday's 2-1 loss to two-time defending Class 2A state champion St. Cloud Cathedral.

The Crusaders entered the game 6-0 and got a complete-game performance from Rudy Sauerer, who struck out six and walked four.

Pierz's Matt Kummet was 2-4 with a double, but was tagged with the loss as he came in relief of starter Matt Tautges. Kummer pitched two innings giving up the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning.

Tautges pitched six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

PINE RIVER-Chad Christianson combined to go 4-for-5 with five RBIs, a double, and a home run for the Pequot Lakes Patriots in Friday's non-conference split with Pine River-Backus.

Zach Sjoblad went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double during the Patriots' 10-2 Game Two.

PR-B's Spencer Richards went 3-for-3 with a double in the Tigers 3-2 Game One win.

W-DC's Preston Warren tallied three hits, including a double and three RBIs, to help the Wolverines secure their fifth straight win.
