PIERZ — Noah Cekalla pitched a complete-game two-hitter and Jeremy Bingesser smashed a two-run home run to power the No. 4 seeded Pierz Pioneers to a 4-1 victory over No. 5 Melrose in the Section 6-2A quarterfinals Wednesday, June 2.

Cekalla struck out six in seven innings. He allowed one run on two hits and didn’t walk a batter.

Kolten Happke finished 2-2 with an RBI single and a run scored. Chandler Doucette finished 2-2 with a double and a run. Michael Leidenfrost scored the other Pierz run.

Pierz beat Melrose 7-2 in the second game of the regular season April 16. The Pioneers improved to 15-6 and will face top-seeded Foley in the Section 6-2A semifinals 5 p.m. Friday, June 4 in Foley.

PRB 12, Nevis 11

NEVIS — Trevor Redding accounted for seven of the 12 Pine River-Backus runs as the No. 3 seeded Tigers upset the No. 2 seeded Nevis Tigers 12-11 in the Section 5-1A quarterfinals Wednesday, June 2.

Nevis swept the regular-season series with PRB 12-0 and 14-8, but Redding finished 2-4 with four runs and three RBIs from his leadoff position.

Irvin Tulenchik, Rian Struss and Konnor King all drove in two runs for the 17-5 PR-B Tigers.

Ryder Compton was 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored. King doubled as one of his two hits as did Tulenchik. Corbin Knapp was 2-2 with an RBI.

Tulenchik pitched the win. He allowed 10 runs, five earned on 12 hits and two walks. He struck out two.
