Area Baseball: Rocheleau keeps Pioneers in 6-2A winner's bracket

ST. CLOUD--Preston Rocheleau pitched a 3-hit complete-game shutout as the East Subsection top-seeded Pierz Pioneers shaded the East No. 3 St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders 1-0 in a Section 6-2A winners bracket game Thursday at Dick Putz Field.

Rocheleau struck out 11 Crusaders and walked one.

Matt Kummet's first-inning sacrifice fly scored the game's only run. Kummet also doubled along with Lane Girtz and Matt Tautges tripled.

The Pioneers, who have won 12 in a row, are ranked third in Class 2A. Pierz beat Cathedral 7-2 during the regular season.

LITTLE FALLS-Derek Poser drove in two runs and Austin Weisz notched a double for No. 3-seeded Little Falls in a 7-3 win over No. 5 Thief River Falls in a Section 8-3A loser's bracket game Thursday.

Poser also pitched three-plus innings in relief of Adam Josephson and recorded the win.

The Flyers, ranked 12th in Class 3A, defeated the Prowlers 16-6 in the regular season.

Aitkin splits

NASHWAUK-Sam Peterson picked up where he left off in Game One as he collected three hits and three RBIs with a double as the Aitkin Gobblers eliminated Virginia 10-0 in a Section 7-2A losers bracket game Thursday.

Teammates Jeb Sanford and Jake Westerlund drove in two runs each. Caleb Curtiss pitched a five-inning complete game shutout, giving up five hits while striking out one.

The Gobblers, ranked 12th in Class 2A, lost to 15th-ranked Duluth Marshall 7-6 in a winners bracket game earlier Thursday. The Gobblers had defeated Duluth 3-2 during the regular season.

Peterson knocked out two doubles and smashed a home run. The Gobblers' Jeb Sanford also doubled and homered while driving in three runs. Sanford took the loss in Game One.

NASHWAUK-In his final game as a Ranger, senior Noah Gindorff went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and run scored for Crosby-Ironton which was eliminated after a 12-4 loss to the Virginia Blue Devils in the Section 7-2A loser's bracket Thursday.

Jake Larson finished 2-4 with a double and Beau Sanford also contributed a double for C-I.

An eight-run sixth inning by the Blue Devils wiped out a 4-3 lead for the Rangers who finished 11-11.

ST. CLOUD-Wyatt Hamann went 2-for-2 and Isaac Witthuhn finished with 1-2 with an RBI as Wadena-Deer Creek closed out its season with an 11-1 loss to West No. 4 Melrose in the Section 6-2A loser's bracket Thursday at Putz Field.

The Wolverines, seeded No. 2 in the West, recorded seven hits. Andrew McCullough took the loss for WDC, which finished 17-6.
