STAPLES-Gavin Smith finished with 27 points as Staples-Motley came up short in an 80-66 loss to Detroit Lakes in a Mid-State Conference game Tuesday.

Jack Fietek and Josh Lombard also hit double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Cardinals whose win streak ended at three games.

The Lakers and Cardinals played in a memorable game earlier in the season with Detroit Lakes winning 84-82. In that game, Smith broke a school record with 43 points and tied another school record with 10 threes.
