SARTELL — After a bogey on the 11th hole pushed Beck Erholtz to 3-over Friday, June 4, the Staples-Motley senior proceeded to birdie the next three holes and finished even par for the first round of the Section 6-2 tournament at Blackberry Ridge Golf Club.
Erholtz owns a 4-stroke lead over none other than Pequot Lakes’ Tyler Seeling. Erholtz shot nines of 38- 34 to finish with a 72. That has the Cardinals team in first place after the opening round.
S-M teammate Carter White battled through the heat to fire a fifth-place 80 followed by an 85 from Adam Oberlander and an 86 from Grant Bestland which has the Cardinals at 323 strokes. Pequot Lakes is sitting second with a team score of 337.
Seeling struggled on his opening nine with two double bogeys to shoot 43. On the 10th hole, however, the junior carded an eagle on the 485-yard par 5. He then posted back-to-back birdies to get to 3-over. Two more bogeys to finish the round has Seeling sitting with a 77.
Teammate Cooper Johnson shot an 85 and Quady Bernu shot 86 followed by 89s from Anthony Armstrong and Isaac Seeker.

Pierz's Lance Otremba is eighth with an 83 to also advance to the final round Monday, June 7.
