PEQUOT LAKES - CJ Borleis rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns and returned an interception for a score as the Pequot Lakes Patriots held off the Staples-Motley Cardinals for a season-opening 38-30 victory Saturday night.
Borleis scored in the first quarter on a 5-yard run and on a 25-yard run in the fourth. On defense, he intercepted a pass and returned it 36 yards for a score in the second quarter.
Pequot Lakes' Chad Christianson ran 12 yards for a TD in the second quarter and 5 yards for a TD in the fourth. He finished with 10 carries for 84 yards.
Trailing 38-16, the Cardinals scored twice in the final three minutes. Hunter Berggren ran in from a yard out with 2:52 remaining. Matt Miller caught a 40-yard scoring pass from Mason Rychner with 1:30 left.
Berggren finished with two TD runs and Rychner with two TD passes.
