Area Football: Wolverines win on big game from Dykhoff

STAPLES--Wadena-Deer Creek quarterback Jake Dykhoff was three-for-three on passing scores, and rushed for the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter as the Wolverines topped Staples-Motley 28-20 in a Midwest Blue Subdistrict matchup Friday.

Dykhoff threw an 82-yard scoring pass to Preston Warren to put the Wolverines on the board in the first quarter. Eric Lisson's 4-yard scamper for the Cardinals tied the game at 6 going to halftime.

Dykhoff put WDC back up early in the third quarter with a 36-yard connection to Dacota Mittage. The Cardinals came right back with a 15-yard pass from Josh Lombard to Derek Kennedy and the teams were tied at 14 entering the fourth quarter.

Dykhoff and Spencer connected on a 34-yard scoring play to put the Wolverines ahead, but the Cardinals Hunter Berggren tied the game at 20 on an 8-yard run. Dykhoff then put the Wolverines back up for good with a 24-yard run with 3:14 left to play.

Dykhoff finished with 247 yards passing. Spencer caught six passes for 85 yards, and Warren recorded four catches for 78 yards.

Lisson of the Cardinals was the leading rusher with 155 yards on 32 carries, and Berggren rushed 16 times for 91 yards.
