Area Girls Basketball: Big first half lifts W-DC past Verndale

Five area girls basketball teams were in action Thursday, Jan. 28.

WADENA — Nevada Schulz led the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines with 13 points in a 55-19 Park Region Conference victory over the Verndale Pirates Thursday, Jan. 28.

Lauryn Gravelle added eight points for W-DC, which held Verndale seven first-half points.

The Pirates were without Tess Jones and were led by Maidson Schmitz’s seven points.

PILLAGER — Pillager’s Juliana Ewald tallied 24 points as the Huskies defeated the Bertha-Hewitt Bears 66-22 in a Park Region Conference game Friday, Jan. 28.

Jenna Woidyla and Emma Schmit each added eight points for the Huskies.

PEQUOT LAKES — Pequot Lakes’ Kelsi Martini, Afton Crocker, Kaitlyn Geschwill and Lauren Schultz each posted six points for the Patriots as they defeated the Park Rapids Panthers in a Mid-State Conference game Thursday, Jan. 28.

Twelve different Patriots found the scoring column to improve Pequot to 3-0 overall.

ANKENNY, Iowa — Lake Region’s Tori Plemel led the Hornets with 18 points and six rebounds as they beat Shawnee Mission 38-35 Friday, Jan. 28, in the Faith Baptist Bible College Tournament, Ankeeny, Iowa.

Plemel’s six points led the Hornets in a 35-16 loss to St. Francis.
