Area Girls Basketball: Tigers fire from long range to top Pirates

PILLAGER — Riley Hirschey drained four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points for the Pine River-Backus Tigers who doubled up the Verndale Pirate 76-38 in the second round of the Fornshell Tournament Friday, Dec. 20.

Olivia Adkins added 17 points with five 3-pointers and Jamie Johnson tallied 12 points. All three Tigers were named to the all-tournament team.

Morgan Brevik-Ashbaugh led Verndale with 10 points. Melissa Hammer contributed eight points and was named to the all-tournament team.

DEER RIVER — Karli Nixon contributed 22 points for the Crosby-Ironton Rangers in a 78-43 non-conference win over the Deer River Warriors in a non-conference game Friday, Dec. 20.

Lily Peterson added 20 points and eight assists for C-I, which improved to 5-2.

LITTLE FALLS — Kaitlyn Smith recorded 10 points, with her last five coming in the last seconds of the game, to secure a Staples-Motley 55-51 win over Upsala in the second round of the Little Falls Holiday Tournament Friday, Dec. 20.

With S-M down 51-50 near the end of the second half, Smith sank a 3-pointer followed with two free throws to secure the win.

S-M’s Tabatha Allen added nine points and 14 rebounds, while Haley Cichos totaled 13 points followed by Elizabeth Danilyuk’s 11 and Katilyn Smith’s 10.
