Area Girls Basketball: Verndale bests S-M in area matchup

VERNDALE — Melissa Hammer scored 20 points as Verndale erased a five-point halftime deficit and defeated Staples-Motley 71-63 in a non-conference game Friday, Dec. 13.

Haley Cichos led the Cardinals in scoring with 22 points.

The Pirates also received double-digit scoring from Tess Jones with 18 points and Keara Kern with 11.

Tabatha Allen added 18 points for Staples-Motley.

Lake Region wins 2

BAXTER — Tori Plemel tallied 10 points as the Lake Region Christian Hornets beat Woodcrest 38-32 in their morning game of the Paul Bunyan Tournament.

Isabel Anderson and Amber Neubert both scored eight points.

Neubert came back and scored 21 points in the night cap as the Hornets won 66-41 over Heritage.

Plemel and Anderson both tallied 14 points for the Hornets in the second game.
