BLAINE-Ari LeMieur and Michala Stangel scored goals for the Northern Lakes Lightning, who were defeated 3-2 in a shootout by the Green Bay Area Ice Bears in the Open American Division of the Schwan's Cup Wednesday, Dec. 26.
The two teams battled to a 2-2 regulation tie and scoreless overtime period before the Ice Bears won the shootout in the opening round of the tournament.
Green Bay took an early lead in the first period, but LeMieur countered less than four minutes later with an assist from Caitlyn Gutzman. A short-handed goal by Madison Anderson gave the Ice Bears a 2-1 edge after two periods.
The Lightning outshot Green Bay 12-4 in the third, but Stangel's goal five minutes in was the only one to get past the Bears goalie Jenna Christopherson. Hayden Boelter was credited with an assist on the tying score.
Each team unsuccessfully put six shots on goal in overtime forcing the second overtime shootout.

Goalie Kate Stephens was credited with 26 saves for Northern Lakes, which finished with a 28-19 shots on goal advantage.
It was the fourth-straight loss for the 5-6 Lightning, who next play the University School of Milwaukee/Marshall loser in consolation semifinals 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27.
