VIRGINIA - Claire Browning finished third in Wednesday's Section 7-1A individual tennis tournament missing a state berth by one place.
The Aitkin Gobblers' junior won her opening-round match over Pine City's Ruth Rike 6-2, 6-2, before falling to Pine City's Natalie Cahill 6-4, 6-3. Cahill went on to finish second.
Browning topped Duluth Marshall's Azelea Ginette 6-0, 7-5, in the third-place match.
Aitkin's doubles team of Lisa Anderson-Marissa Kinzer lost its opening round match 7-6 (10-1), 6-2, to Pine City's Rave Rarick-Alyssa Bursott. The Rarick-Bursott team placed fourth.
