SARTELL -- Alexa Fyle and Ellie Saexrud grinded out a three-set victory at No. 1 doubles to secure Pequot Lakes’ placement in the Class 1A State Tournament after a 4-3 victory over Virginia in the Section 7-1A Finals Monday, Oct. 14.
Fyle-Saxerud won the first set 7-6 with A 7-5 tiebreaker. After dropping the second set, the two rebounded for a 6-4 victory in the third set.
Pequot also scored wins from megan Muller and Carly Chaney in singles play and Morgan Lueck-Quinn Trottier in doubles.
The South’s No. 1 seeded Patriots opened the section tournament with a 6-1 victory over Eveleth-Gilbert Courtney Boller dominated her No. 2 singles match for a 6-0, 6-0 win. Chaney posted the same score in her win at No. 4 singles.

SARTELL -- Haley Cichos and Jenna Dvorak will enter the Class 1A State Individual Tournament as Section 5-1A champions after they claimed the title Monday, Oct. 14.
The Staples-Motley pair defeated their teammates Tasha Achermann-Rose Han 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals and the topped Pierz’s Abby Andrea-Katelyn Smude 6-3, 6-3 in the section final to advance to the state tournament.
And they won’t be going alone. After falling in the semifinals, Achermann-Han downed Paige and Jessica Danzl of Melrose in the third-place match to set up a true-second match against Andrea-Smude. The Cardinals duo won 6-1, 6-4 to advance as the No. 2 seed out of the Section 5-1A tournament.
Eighth grader Lauren Rutten opened with a victory over Pierz’s Val Gall in the semifinals, but suffered a loss in the section championship to New London-Spicer’s Ava Hanson.
That forced Rutten, S-M’s No. 1 singles player all season, into a true-second match against NL-S’s Izzy Schmiesing, who topped Rutten 7-5, 7-5.
