Few things can be said to be inaugural when dealing with the storied history of the Confidence Learning Center Golf Classic.

In its 43rd season of raising money for Camp Confidence, the tournament has used different venues, but found a home at The Classic at Madden's Resort the last seven years. Five years ago the tournament committee added a nine-hole option for those too busy for 18 holes.

This season, however, something new to the fundraising tournament and the area is happening.

The inaugural Camp Classic Long Drive competition, sponsored by Brenny Funeral Chapel, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. June 16 at Madden's Airport Driving Range.

The night before the 18-hole, four-person scramble, 32 men and 16 women will compete in a bracketed long drive competition. Prize money totaling $3,000 will be awarded to the top three in each division as well as random draw positions.

"We have had 43 years of Classic tradition in our golf outing and tradition is awesome, but sometimes you need to change things up or add to it," said Sarah Smith, events coordinator at Confidence Learning Center. "So this is kind of an idea, when looking at what other big golf tournaments have done, we thought we should have a long drive competition because this area really doesn't have one."

The event is open to amateurs only. Matchups on the bracket will be selected using a random draw. The cost to enter is $100 per participant with USGA rules governing the event. Food and beverages will be available during the event, which Smith said is almost half full already.

The two winners will each receive $500. Second-place finishers will earn $250 and $100 will go to third place. There will be two random draws per division. There will also be other awards for best dressed and other miscellaneous categories.

"Fifteenth place might get something. 32nd place might get something," Smith said. "We're giving cash prizes to fun things like best dressed as well. Our goal is to really keep this fun.

"We're hoping on our part that this just becomes another great aspect of a fundraiser for camp. We want to do this in a fun way. We're hoping that this is also a new way to bring in more people who may or may not know about Camp or the Camp Classic. That's why we're doing this on Thursday evening. It's a new part to kickoff the events, especially for those who maybe aren't able to take Friday off to golf in the golf classic."

The golf classic will once again be at The Classic with registration at noon and a 1:15 p.m. shotgun start. The nine-hole tournament will be at Madden's Pine Beach West with registration starting at 2:15 p.m. and a shotgun start at 3:30 p.m.

The 33rd annual Nick Adams Memorial Fishing Classic is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 18.
