Area Golf: Israelson repeats as Birchmont champ

BEMIDJI-Andrew Israelson of the Vintage at Staples defended his men's champion title as the 93rd Annual Birchmont at Bemidji Town and Country Club.

The former Staples-Motley Cardinal and current North Dakota State University Bison defeated James Foss of Roseau 5-4 in the final match.

Brainerd's Gavin Metz earned a spot in the championship bracket, but fell in both of his matches 1-up to Foss and 4-3 to St. Cloud's Robert Stocker.

Israelson's older brother Zach also finished 0-2 in the championship bracket. Zach fell to Tim Skarperud 4-3 in the opening round and to Wyatt Blomseth of Detroit Lakes 1-up in the consolation bracket.

Brainerd's Jack Evans landed in the Vice President's flight and finished runner-up to Luke Sheetz of Grand Rapids 3-2. Evans opened with a 4-2 win over Keaton Lausch. He then knocked out Staples' Mitch Hagenson 8-7 and topped Alex Skarperud 2-1 before losing the final match.

Trenton Hagenson of Staples finished 0-2 in the Vice President's flight.

Emily Israelson, a senior at Augustana University, wasn't able to defend her women's title as she fell to eventual runner-up Kristin Glesne of San Antonio 1-up in the quarterfinals. Israelson went on to finish second in the consolation bracket.

In the women's first flight bracket, Heather Erholtz of Staples eliminated her daughter Bo Erholtz. Heather Erholtz finished second. Alexandra Peterson of Staples defeated Amber Koth of Chaska 3-2 to win the consolation title. Peterson beat Staples' Emily Ladd in the round before 2-1.

Peterson fell to the consolation bracket thanks to former S-M Cardinal Olivia Klefsaas, who beat Peterson 6-5 before losing to eventual champion Carrie Lundgren 1-up.

Other area players competing were Staples' Brad Anderson, who advanced to the semifinals of the Executive Championship. Dale Finck of Henning and Derek Hasselberg, formerly of Staples, were eliminated in the quarterfinal round. Hasselberg then beat Fink 3-2 in the consolation bracket before falling to Matt Meyer of Fargo.

Scott Woods lost his only match in the Executive Chairman bracket before winning the Chairman's first flight title 4-2 over Brad McEnroe of Minneapolis.

Glen Hasselberg of Staples advanced to the semifinals of the Masters Division where he fell to Dick Dornbusch of Battle Lake. Dornbusch fell to Perham's Jeff Tweeton in the finals.

Beck Erholtz won the junior second flight with a 3-2 victory over Peter Stadheim of Mason City, Iowa. Erholtz's older brother Finn, captured the consolation bracket crown with a win over Jack Lindgren of Grand Forks.

Wadena's Kade Woods was runner-up in the Junior fourth flight. Cole Woods won the Junior 10-12 division.
