Area Golf News: Giovanni's ties Von Hanson's for lead in Cragun's men's league

Mike Mohrfeld's 10.5 points enabled Giovanni's Pizza to move into a first-place tie with Von Hanson's Meats after a 34.5-9.5 victory over Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union in the men's league at Cragun's Legacy Courses July 19.


Mike Mohrfeld's 10.5 points enabled Giovanni's Pizza to move into a first-place tie with Von Hanson's Meats after a 34.5-9.5 victory over Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union in the men's league at Cragun's Legacy Courses July 19.

Von Hanson's, the undisputed leader entering July 19, dropped into a tie for first following a 22-22 tie with State Farm Insurance.

Edward Jones slipped to third despite a 26-18 win over People's Security.

Eric Pion provided 10 points for .925 Silver and Tim Trott (Big Wood) and Bob Thorkelson (Thelen Heating and Roofing) each scored 9.5 points for their teams.

Legacy women

Donna Gottsch aced the 90-yard second hole July 17 on the Par 3 Course at Cragun's Legacy Courses during women's night.

Gottsch used a 5-wood for her first career ace, but it wasn't on the proximity hole so the closest to the pin winner was Deb Frazer. Jan Weik made the longest putt.

On the Dutch Legacy, Tina Johnson won the longest drive and longest putt on the front nine, while the back nine winner was Kathy Fore.


Scramble night will be Tuesday, July 31.

L.A. Lawn Services remained in the lead of the men's league standings after its 12-8 victory over Dockside July 18 at Breezy Point Resort.

Billy's 1 secured second place by itself as it downed Verkennes/Burgoyne 13.5-6.5. Billy's 4 jumped up to third place after it defeated Billy's 2 12.5-7.5.

Cathy Munger, Pat Kline and Dawn Wiebusch placed second with a 135. With a 137, the team of Betsy Otteson, Cheryl Bontrager and Sandy Meyer placed third followed by Anita Stensby, Mimi Swanson and Nancy Schmidt.

Enga Wodziak and Pam Musielewicz were the low individual net scorers with matching 65s.

Enger, Moakley, Betsy Otteson, Stensby and Kline posted birdies with Schmidt and Musielewicz enjoying chip-in birdies and Mary Kay Kendall dropping a chip in.

MGA news

Andrew Israelson of The Vintage at Staples tied for eighth place in the Minnesota State Open Championship July 20-22 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids.

Israelson shot 73-69-72 for an even-par total of 214.

Bill Israelson, also of The Vintage, tied for 21st with rounds of 72-74-73 to finish at 3-over-par 219.

Tim Johnson of Cragun's Legacy Courses tied for 56th with 73-75-79 for an 11 over-par 227 total.
