Area Golf: Von Hanson's leads Cragun's men's league

Tim Johnson's nine points helped Von Hanson's Meats grill Big Wood 25.5-18.5 July 12 to build an 8.5-point lead over the men's league field at Cragun's Legacy Courses.

Tim Johnson's nine points helped Von Hanson's Meats grill Big Wood 25.5-18.5 July 12 to build an 8.5-point lead over the men's league field at Cragun's Legacy Courses.

Edward Jones topped US Bank 25.5-18.5 to land in second place and The Tee Hive is in third after beating NextHome Horizons 26-18.

People's Security was the big point getter as they topped Mid-Minnesota 34.5-9.6. Joe Michalewicz posted the big with 10 points for People's.

Patti Mernin and Kelli Johnson went pin hunting July 17 as they were closest to the pin winners on Bobby's Legacy for women's night at Cragun's Legacy Courses.

Ginny McDonald sank the longest putt.

On the Par 3 Course, Julie Stanton made the longest putt and Wendy Schamp was closest to the pin.

Breezy Point men

L.A. Lawn Services used a 12-8 victory over Old School July 11 to grab a 3.5-point lead over the men's league field at Breezy Point Resort.

Billy's 1 is in a tie for second despite losing 11-9 to JJ's Pub. Verkennes/Burgoyne tied Hack Attack 10-10 to move into a tie for second.

Breezy Point women

Sue Skinner and Joi Brandt tied with plus-2 scores to lead the first flight in the July 12 beat-your-points event for the Breezy Point Resort women's league.

Barb Owens won the second flight with a plus-4 followed by Connie Weber.

Gloria Thomas won the third flight with Sue Marsolais in second, Martha Polsfuss in third and Bunny Oseland in fourth.

Judy Thomas was the top finisher in the fourth flight. Connie Colin was next.

Bugs Schmidt captured the fifth flight and Betty Huseby was second.

Play July 18 will be at Whitebirch and it is guest day.

Whitefish men

Roger Weber, Greg Jorvig, Tom Baker and Warren Kleinsser won the stableford team event July 13 for the Whitefish men's league.

Arlen Stansby, Rollie Renstrom, Mike Carnahna and Chuck Hicks were second and Jerry Moore, Bill Carlson, Sam Kantos and Jim Devinck placed third.

Bill Bell and Fred Skog made the longest putts and Bell and Mike Rancour were closest to the pin.

Whitefish women

Maxine Riches needed a tiebreaker to distance herself from Barb Hanson and Deb Enger, but won the 4 Score game July 11 during the Whitefish Women's 18-hole League.

Riches shot a net 38 on all the par 4s as did Hanson and Enger. Rox Thompson carded a 40 for fourth place in the first flight.

Kathy Coombs captured the second flight with a 39. Nancy Schmidt was second followed by Cheryl Bontrager and Diane Giefer.

Dawn Wiebusch needed a tiebreaker to top Cheryl Stansfield to win the third flight. Ginny Sitzer was third and Joi Brandt fourth.

Riches and Wiebusch tied for the overall low net 66s.

Schmidt, Riches, Connie Weber and Enger all carded birdies. Darlene Bonnema, Anita Stensby, Nancy McEnroe, Giefer and Riches all had chip ins.

Ruttger's crowns club champ

Jack Olson bettered Walt Parsons in a sudden death playoff to win the overall Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge club championship July 16 on Jack's 18.

Tom Murphy carded a net 72 for the net championship followed by Greg Hills with a 77.

Two women's events slated

The Cuyuna Rolling Hills women's golf association will host a nine-hole Rally for the Cure event and a nine-hole Memorial Tournament July 25.

The Rally event will begin at 8;30 a.m. with the Memorial tournament starting around 10:45 a.m.

All area women are invited. There is a $20 tax deductible donation for the Rally event.

There will be a special "Rally" rate for green fees if you are not a member of Cuyuna Rolling Hills. Lunch will be available and a variety of proximity prizes will be awarded.

Junior Open scheduled

Cragun's Legacy Courses will be the site of the Minnesota Summer Junior Open July 29-30 in East Gull Lake.

The event, sponsored by Hurricane Junior Golf Tour and Chris Foley Golf Schools, is $229 for members and $289 for non-members. For a special discounted tournament rate call Chip at Hurricane at 407-614-2962 ext. 4.

St. Francis tournament

The St. Francis of the Lakes Golf Classic is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 9 at Cragun's Legacy Courses in East Gull Lake.

The cost is $100 per person, which includes golf, cart and dinner. For those interested in dinner only the cost is $35.
