Area Legion Baseball: Pierz advances in Northeast Substate Tournament

ELY--Alex Funk and Isaac Otte each went 2-for-3 as the Pierz American Legion team remained in the winners bracket of the Northeast Substate Division II Tournament with a 4-3 win over Esko Wednesday, July 25.

Preston Rocheleau drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher. In four innings, he yielded five hits and one earned run with no walks and two strikeouts. Otte pitched the final three innings allowing two hits and no runs with three walks and one strikeout.

In the opening round earlier Wednesday, Lane Girtz went 2-2 with a home run and two RBIs in Pierz's 9-5 win over Virginia. Peter Schommer was 2-4 and Rocheleau and Cody Kimman each drove in two runs.

Kimman got the win pitching 5.2 innings allowing nine hits and three earned) runs with three walks and four strikeouts. Reese Kapsner pitched a spotless final 1.1 innings.

Foley 7, Little Falls 2

SARTELL-Zach Opatz went 2-for-4 as third-seeded Little Falls' season ended in the losers bracket of the Substate 12 Tournament Wednesday, July 25, with a 7-2 loss to top-seeded Foley.

Opatz and Jake Kapphahn scored the only Little Falls runs. Opatz scored on a bases-loaded walk and Kapphahn on a sacrifice by Anthony Vetter.

Sam Nagel started and pitched two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks. Travis Wenzel worked 2.2 innings allowing one hit and three runs with four walks and six strikeouts. Nik Durfee pitched the final 1.1 innings striking out two and allowing no hits, runs or walks.
