Area Softball: Flyers score 4 in eighth to beat Pierz

LITTLE FALLS--Christy Masog went 3-5 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Little Falls Flyers to their first win of the season, 8-4 over the Pierz Pioneers Tuesday in a non-conference game.

Linzee Gerads pitched all eight innings for the win striking out five and walking just one.

Claire Reardon collected two of the Pioneer's four hits, including a double and drove in three of their four runs. Taylor Cummings also doubled.

SM sweeps CI

STAPLES-Carly Smith pitched two complete games for the Staples-Motley Cardinals who swept the Crosby-Ironton Rangers 17-7 and 22-5 in Mid-State Conference play Tuesday.

Lisa Kossan tripled and Quinn Uhlman, Paige Kittleson and Jenna Trantina hit doubles for the Cards in Game One.

In the second game, Uhlman was 4-4 with a double. Emma Gerard also doubled and Smith was 2-4.

Kaitlyn Johnson homered for C-I in the opener and Casidy Duerr had the only Ranger hit in the nightcap. Maddy Kertzman finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Patriots split with Lakers

DETROIT LAKES-Kathryn Miska pitched 15 innings, losing Game One in 10 innings and getting the Game Two win in five, as Class 2A's fifth-ranked Pequot Lakes Patriots split a Mid-State Conference doubleheader with Class 3A's seventh-ranked Detroit Lakes Tuesday.

Alex Kotaska homered and went 2-6 with three RBI, while Haley Wiebolt homered and finished 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the Game One 10-9 loss. Jessica Faacks homered and Laura Squires and Cassandra Haman each doubled.

Miska recorded 12 strikeouts in the loss.

Pequot knocked out 14 hits on its way to a Game Two 18-2 victory.

Clare Ganley went 3-3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs. Laura Squires doubled and Miska homered while striking out nine.

PINE RIVER-Miah Hansen pitched two complete-game victories with a combined 12 strikeouts in the Pine River-Backus Tigers 12-6, 18-5 Upper Mississippi Conference sweep over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Tuesday.

Hanson was also 3-4 with two RBIs and a double

Lindsey Tulenchik went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double during the Tigers Game One win.

Allison Anderson, Alexus Reddick and Tulenchik hit doubles in Game Two.

BHV sweeps WDC

VERNDALE-Jordan Carr pitched two five-inning victories for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders who defeated the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 15-3 and 17-4 in Park Region Conference play Tuesday.

Carr struck out a combined six and walked four, while allowing 13 hits.

Sarah Moenkedick, Jordyn Glenz, Sydney Weniger and Michaela Powers had two hits apiece for BHV in the opener.

In Game Two, Glenz went 3-5 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. Moenkedick was 2-4 with a double and Alysha was 2-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Danica Gilb was 4-4 with four singles.

Kayla Peters doubled and Lila Lohmiller tripled in the nightcap for the winless Wolverines.
