Area Softball: Patriots open with 2 wins

Three area teams competed in the Frazee Tournament.

FRAZEE — Morgan Eckes pitched Pequot Lakes to two wins, including a no-hitter, as the Patriots finished 2-1 at the Frazee tournament Saturday, April 17.

Even the one loss could have been a victory as Kaitlyn Geschchwill pitched a complete-game gem. She finished with nine strikeouts and allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks in a 3-1 loss to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. Taylor Sherack hit an RBI single in the seventh, but the Patriots left the bases loaded in the seventh.

In a season-opening 1-0 victory over Frazee, Maci Martini hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the lone run. It was her first varsity hit.

Eckes allowed two hits and four walks and struck out eight.

In a four-inning 16-1 blowout of East Grand Forks, Ekes struck out five, walked four and didn’t allow a hit and just one unearned run.


Maya Orvis finished 4-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. Geschwill, Afton Crocker and Quinn Trottier each posted two hits, including a home run by Geschwill.

PR-B wins 1

FRAZEE — Jaime Johnson finished with three hits, including a double and four runs scored as Pine River-Backus topped Staples-Motley 17-8 in the third game at the Frazee tournament Saturday, April 17.

PR-B opened with an 11-8 loss to Mahnomen-Waubun and fell 10-0 to Sebeka in Game Two.

Rylee Norman, Chloe Beavers and Mara Adams finished with two hits against M-W. Danielle Burgoyne posted two hits against Sebeka.

Norman, Adams and Ariana Burns each finished with two hits against S-M.

Staples-Motley drops 3

FRAZEE — The Staples-Motley Cardinals dropped all three of their games at the Frazee tournament Saturday, April 17.

S-M opened with a loss to Sebeka and then fell to Mahnomen-Waubun and lost 17-8 To Pine River-Backus.
