Area Softball: Pequot rallies for the win

PEQUOT LAKES--Ari Merta finished 3-4 with a double and three RBIs, including the tying run, and Afton Crocker's sacrifice fly scored Mariah Rickard to lead Pequot Lakes to a 6-5 victory over Pillager Monday, April 22.

Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, Pequot's Kaitlyn Geschwill reached on an error followed by singles from Rickard and Kenzie Nelson. Merta's single drove in Geschwill to tie the score and Crocker won it with a deep shot to the outfield.

Rickard and Nelson were each 2-4.

Morgan Eckes pitched the victory. She struck out nine and allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits and four walks.

Ella Kilchesky was tagged with the loss, but hit a home run and Kacey Anderson was 3-4 with an RBI.

Mora 11, Aitkin 3

AITKIN-Kailey Piekkenpol ripped a two-run single and Ally Ehnstrom contributed two hits for the Aitkin Gobblers in an 11-3 non-conference loss to the Mora Mustangs Monday, April 22.

Piekkenpol struck out 12 over 5 2/3 innings. She walked seven, three of those coming in the sixth after a blister burst on her finger.

PINE RIVER-Jada Olivier allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and five walks and struck out 10 to pitch the Pine River-Backus Tigers to a 13-2 Upper Mississippi Conference win over Red Lake Monday, April 22.

Bailey Wynn went 2-4 with three runs, three RBIs and stole two bases.

Rylee Norman went 1-2 with a run and two RBIs and the 1-1 Tigers saw 10 different players score a run.

PINE RIVER-Tess Jones finished 4-4 with three runs, five RBIs and a triple for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders as they outscored the Pine River-Backus Tigers 14-8 in a non-conference game Monday, April 22.

Molly Brownlow finished 5-5 with three runs, an RBI and a double. Mardi Ehrmantraut was 4-5 with an RBI and winning pitcher Melanie Line stuck out four.

PRB's Bailey Wynn went 2-3 with three runs, an RBI and a double. Danielle Burgoyne went 2-4 with a double and Jada Olivier struck out five.

STAPLES-The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines were outhit 11-10, but took advantage of 23 walks and four hit batters in a 28-8 six-inning win over the Staples-Motley Cardinals Monday, April 22.

Laura Krause went 2-5 with a double and four RBIs for WDC. Courtny Warren also doubled while Nevada Schulz finished 2-3 and Kyla Ness was 2-4 with four RBIs.

The Cards were led by Valeria Lozano who went 3-4 with a pair of RBIs. Amber Longworth was 3-4 with an RBI and Jasmine Braith contributed a double.
