Win the Section 5-1A title. That one will have to wait until 7 p.m. Saturday when the Verndale Pirates will play Nevis for the chance to go the Class 1A state tournament.

Verndale eliminated the Browerville/Eagle Valley Tigers Thursday 3-1 thanks to a quick start and the power hitting of Jordyn and Shania Glenz. Jordyn Glenz knocked down nine kills in the first set leading to a 25-20 edge. The Pirates led from the start of Set One, but Browerville bolted to a 17-13 edge. Two straight Shania Glenz kills helped the Pirates roll off a 12-2 run. Jordyn Glenz had five kills in the run, including the deciding point.

"We knew we needed to come out on them right away," said Verndale head coach Shelley Glenz. "Last year, we felt like we didn't do that and it didn't work out well for us. We knew that would be key. They're a great team and we needed the momentum right from the start."

Set Two was all Verndale as it built a 14-8 lead and just kept adding on for a 25-13 win. Morgan Glenz finished the match with an ace serve.

Browerville answered with a contested 25-21 Set 3 win. The Tigers used a 6-0 run to build a 19-13 edge. Verndale rallied to cut it to 23-20, but couldn't collect the come-from-behind win.

"We can't let up," said Shelley Glenz. "We need to work on that for the next game. Everybody is good at this point. So you give them a little breath and it costs you."

The sealed the deal in Set 4. An Alyssa Thompson kill helped Verndale to a 21-16 lead, but Browerville tied the set at 21-21 and grabbed a 23-21 edge before Shania Glenz knocked down two more kills. A couple of unforced errors later and Verndale was celebrating its first win over Browerville in three straight section finals (two in volleyball, one in basketball).

"This rivalry goes back to fourth grade," said Shelley Glenz. "It's just an awesome feeling for these girls. I'm really proud of them for pulling it through."
