UNDERWOOD — Gideon Ervast and Jaden Finck each won late matches to help clinch No. 1 seeded Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie’s trip to the state tournament with a 39-21 victory over No. 2 West Central l in the championship of the Section 6-1A tournament Friday, Feb 14.
The Raiders advanced to the championship with a 51-24 win over No. 5 New York Mills in the semifinals.
BHVPP beat New York Mills 37-27 Dec. 5 and West Central 37-28 Jan. 9.
David Revering and Deagen Captain each won their matches against West Central to put BHVPP up 8-0 in the championship meet. They led 20-3 after wins by Reese Thompson, Justin Koehn and Jason Koehn, but the Knights climbed to 26-21.
That is when Ervasti and Finck secured wins to push the Raiders’ lead to 33-21 and clinch the match. A forfeit win for Craig Orlando made the final score 39-21.
