Baseball: Brainerd Legion advances to state

American Legion Post 255 will represent Brained in the Division I state tournament Aug. 2-5 in Edina after topping Cloquet 10-0 in the Substate 10 championship Saturday.

American Legion Post 255 will represent Brained in the Division I state tournament Aug. 2-5 in Edina after topping Cloquet 10-0 in the Substate 10 championship Saturday.

Brainerd, which enters the state tournament with a 21-12 record, will open play in the 16-team tournament Aug. 2. The tournament is a double-elimination format.

Tournament games will be played at Courtney Fields and Braemar Park, Round Lake Stadium in Eden Prairie, Richfield High School and Garden Park in Edina. The championship game will be Aug. 5 at Braemar.

Warriors blank Cloquet to win Substate

GRAND RAPIDS-McCale Peterson scattered two hits and one walk to pitch Brainerd to a 10-0 victory over Cloquet in the championship game of the Substate 10, Division I tournament Saturday.

Peterson only struck out one in his six innings of work and held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Brainerd exploded for nine runs. Peterson helped himself by going 3-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Max Boran drove in two runs and Colin Kleffman was 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs.

Tristan Richardt finished 2-3 with a double and two runs. Broc Peterson doubled and Hunter Wicklund was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to advance to the Legion State Tournament.

Brainerd fell to Cloquet 3-2 in Friday's game. Hunter Wicklund went 2-5. Sam Miller drove in a run and scored and Alex Haapajoki was 1-2 with three walks and one run scored.

Dave Benson suffered the loss. He allowed six hits and five walks in five innings resulting in two runs, on earned. He struck out two.
