Josh Hukreide hit an RBI single, one of his two hits, in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Brainerd Legion up 6-5 in the Central Lakes Classic Tournament championship game Sunday, July 7, but Brainerd ended up losing to Nebraska 8-7 in extra innings.
Hukreide went 2-4 in the game adding another single and a run scored. Colin Kleffman hit two singles and scored two runs with one RBI. Broc Peterson added 2 singles of his own with a run scored. Seth Vagts went 1-3 with an RBI single and a walk.
Brainerd had Nebraska down to its final out in the top of the seventh inning, but an error on a ground ball allowed the tying run to score with two outs. In the top of the eighth Nebraska scored two runs and in the bottom of the eighth Brainerd had the bases loaded with one out but only managed to score one run on a Kleffman fielder’s choice.
Renzen Caughey pitched six innings for Brainerd. He struck out three batters and allowed three runs, none of them earned. Eric Martin earned the loss as he gave up the runs in the eighth inning.
