Baseball: Helmin leads American League to slim win

The American League slipped past the National League 9-8 in the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department's 19th annual Pony League Mid-Summer Classic on Monday at Bane Park.

The American League slipped past the National League 9-8 in the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department's 19th annual Pony League Mid-Summer Classic on Monday at Bane Park.

Alex Helmin won the American League MVP trophy with a single, double and two RBI. Teammate Payton Whirley stroked three singles while Jackson Scheinost and Gavin Schwen each collected singles. On the mound, Noah Rushmeyer didn't allow a hit and fanned four batters in two innings of work while Kody True struck out three and allowed one hit in two innings.

Cole Larkin was named the MVP of the National League as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and also struck out three batters while pitching. Teammate Asher Pearl was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and fanned four batters in two innings. Alex Scott had a double and single and Reice Pikula stroked two doubles and struck out three batters.
