ROGERS — A three-run first inning turned into a 7-1 victory for the No. 3 seeded Rogers Royals against No. 6 seeded Brainerd Warriors in the opening round of the Section 8-4A tournament Wednesday, June 2.
Brainerd’s Will Carlson drove in Reice Pikula who singled earlier in the third inning to cut Rogers’ lead to 3-1, but the Royals tacked on a run in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the final score.
Riley DeRosier accounted for Brainerd’s other hit. He also was hit by a pitch to reach base twice. Andrew Zuk walked and stole a base.
Jack Schafer was tagged with the loss. He allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits and two walks. He struck out three.
Charles Johnson pitched 1.1 innings of relief and allowed two runs on four hits. Christian Augustine pitched a perfect sixth inning in relief.

The Warriors fall into the Section 8-4A loser’s bracket where they will face the loser of No. 1 St. Michael-Albertville vs. No. 4 Elk River 5 p.m. Saturday, June 5 in Cold Spring.
