PIERZ -- Joe Kahl belted a three-run homer and drove in two more runs with a double to lead the Buckman Billygoats, who came from behind to defeat the Pierz Bulldogs 10-6 Sunday, July 7.
The East Division contest was the final regular season game for both teams.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first when Peter Schommer lined a two-out single to right and eventually scored on a double steal following a single by Chuck Boser. Pierz added three more runs to their lead in the third with two singles, a groundout RBI and four Buckman errors.
Pierz starting pitcher Jonah Prokott retired the first nine batters he faced before putting the first two Buckman batters on in the fourth with a walk and hit batter. Two outs later Kahl drove in both runners with a double for the first Buckman hit of the game to start the Billygoats’ comeback.
The game was tied 6-6 going into the ninth. With one out, Buckman’s Lane Girtz and Matt Kummet singled. Aaron Weber then hit a potential double-play ground ball to short that was mishandled and allowed Girtz to race home for the go-ahead run. Kahl followed by blasting the first pitch over the center field wall for the final three runs.
Weber retired the Bulldogs in order with a groundout and two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning to earn the win. He pitched the final three innings, over which he struck out six, walked two, and allowed one hit and one run.
Kummet finished 2-5 with a double and an RBI and scored twice for the Billygoats.
