Christian Augustine got the lone hit for Brainerd in their 9-5 loss to Chaska in the first game of the VFW Baseball Tournament Thursday, Aug. 8 at Brainerd High School’s Adamson Field.
Brainerd drew six walks and two hit by pitches to generate base runners and scratch across five runs despite only managing one hit off Chaska pitching. All three runs scored by Brainerd in the top of the seventh inning were on wild pitches
Andrew Zuk, Isaac Hanson and Will Carlson all scored runs for Brainerd and each had a walk. Carlson even stole a base for Brainerd.
Charlie Johnson got the start for Brainerd and pitched three and 2/3 innings. He allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on nine hits and walked three. He also had four strikeouts.
Jake Schafer pitched 1/3 inning of scoreless relief and retired the only batter he faced. Cole Larkin pitched two innings of relief allowed two runs, none of them earned, on one hit with two strikeouts.
Brainerd committed four errors in the field in the loss putting them in the loser’s bracket of the tournament.
Augustine ripped a first inning two-RBI double in their next game at Mills Field Thursday. Brainerd scored four first inning runs, but still dropped the game to Mankato 10-5 knocking them out of the tournament.
Paris Hampton also ripped an RBI double in the third inning that scored Carlson who scored twice in the game.
Reice Pikula went 1-2 with an RBI and two walks. Zuk also walked twice and scored a run despite going 0-3.
Schafer got the start against Makato and pitched three innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Hanson came on in relief for Schafer and allowed six runs, none of them earned on two hits and walked five batters in two and 2/3 innings.
Matt Karlson finished the game and pitched one and 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
