Carter Springer pitched five innings and allowed one run in Brainerd VFW 16U’s 11-1 win over Pierz in six innings Tuesday, July 21, at Mills Field.

Brainerd sent nine to the plate in the bottom of the first and scored three. Riley DeRosier plated two runs with an RBI single and Adam Jensen notched an RBI single.

Jensen went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. DeRosier finished the game with a single, a walk and threw out Pierz’s Andy Winscher trying to steal.

Winscher started for Pierz and allowed eight runs in four innings. Pierz’s one run came in the top of third when Ben Virnig drove in Hunter Hoheisel on a single.

In the bottom of the third, Isaac Hanson scored Nash Sletton on a sacrifice fly and Springer got an RBI single scoring second baseman Jackson Scheinost.

Hanson finished the game 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. Springer went 1-4 with his RBI.

Eight of Brainerd’s nine starters tallied a hit as they stretched their lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

After DeRosier was hit by a pitch and Matt Karlson singled, Jensen dribbled a ball not too far from home plate. Pierz’s catcher Ben Virnig threw the ball over the first baseman’s head, scoring Gavin Berg, who courtesy ran for DeRosier.

Alex Helmin and Nash Sletton each earned RBI ground outs in the three-run fourth inning by Brainerd.

Karlson ripped an RBI single in the fifth scoring Jack Schafer.

Karlson went 2-2 with two walks and a run. Scheinost went 2-3 with a walk.

Cayden Kleffman hit for Isaac Hanson in the sixth and got a single that scored Helmin and Schafer drove in the last run of the game on a sacrifice fly.

Schafer finished the game with two walks and a single to go along with the game-clinching RBI.

Reese Young went 2-3 for Pierz with two singles. Isaac Walcheski singled twice and went 2-3. Mitchell Herman came on in relief for Winscher and pitched 1 2/3 innings.

Zach Jones and Virnig each went 1-3 with a single.

Mitchel Deagan pitched the sixth inning for Brainerd and struck out two.

Brainerd batters walked nine times, while Brainerd only walked Pierz twice.

Brainerd’s 15U team won 3-2 the game after.
