Sawyer Hennessey struck out six in 5.1 innings of work to pitch the Brainerd 16U VFW team to a 7-3 regular-season ending victory over Monticello Monday, July 19, at Adamson Field in Brainerd.

Hennessey allowed two runs on three hits and two walks.

Jon Bensen finished with two hits and three RBIs and Hennessey drove in two runs himself. Henry Hopkins blasted a home run and walked for Brainerd.

Mitchell Brau, Cayden Brown and Keaton Lingenfelter collected Brainerd’s other hits. Brau and Isaac Hanson each stole a base.

Brody Lund pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief. He struck out two.

Brainerd finishes league play 7-4 and enters the playoffs with an overall record of 18-4. Brainerd will be the No. 2 seed for playoffs and will host Princeton in a best two out of three series. The first two games will be in Brainerd 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday with a third game, if necessary, in Princeton.

A victory over Princeton will catapult Brainerd in the district playoffs July 26-30 in Cold Spring.
