Biathlon: Christiansen second overall at fall festival series

Cam Christiansen of the Nisswa Northwest Biathlon Club finished second overall and first in the Youth Men's division at the 11.4-kilometer Fall Festival Series pursuit race Sunday at Elk River.

Shooting 2,1,2,0, Christiansen was only four seconds behind the winner Jacob Dahlberg who shot 2,2,2,0. Christiansen finished in 36:05.

Zach Nelson, NNW, Senior Class, shot 4,0,4,4, and finished in 44:34.

In the women's 9.3km event, Hanne Guthrie, NNW, Senior Woman, shot 3,2,4,2, to finish third in 36:20. Jenna Ruzich, NNW, Senior Woman, was fourth shooting 2,2,2,1, in 40:05.

The Minnesota Biathlon Fall Festival series consists of 6km of skiing with prone and standing shooting stages on 50-meter targets. Targets are 45mm and 115 mm, respectively.

The next biathlon events in Minnesota will be at Mt. Itasca in Coleraine in December.

On Saturday, Christiansen won the 6km roller ski biathlon sprint.

In the first shooting, Christiansen stayed close to Wynn Roberts, National Guard Team and 2010 Olympian, with both cleaning their prone targets. Hanne Guthrie, NNW, missed two, Evan Ingebrigtson, NNW, missed one and Josh Duda, NNW, missed four.

As the first starter, Roberts was back in the range to shoot standing before Christiansen but missed two while Christiansen shot his first clean race in four years of competition. Moving into the lead while Roberts was in the penalty loop, Christiansen held first place only dropping 15 seconds to Roberts on skis in the final 2km ski leg.
