Joey Sauer's 28 points and nine rebounds paced the Brainerd Warriors in a 77-68 loss to the Moorhead Spuds Thursday, Feb. 28 at Brainerd High School.
It also helped Sauer reach 1,000 for his career. The senior becomes the 11th Warrior boy to reach the scoring milestone, including Sauer's older brother Jack Sauer, who accomplished the feat in 2013.
Brainerd's Ben Staehling contributed 13 points and Mason Malone dropped 10 points in the Section 8-4A matchup.
Gabe Smith got the start Thursday and contributed 10 assists to go with four points.
Moorhead entered Thursday's game as the No. 4 seed in the section standings. Brainerd entered as No. 5. With one game left for Brainerd, this could be a preview of the section quarterfinals for these two teams.
