COLD SPRING-Gavin Metz fired a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Brainerd Warriors to a second-place 302 Wednesday, May 30, in the opening round of the Section 8-3A tournament at Rich Spring Golf Course.
Metz opened with a 1-over 37 on the front and posted two birdies and two bogeys on the back for an even-par 36 leading to his 73, which has him sitting in second place individually.
Cody Evans followed with a 75 as he shot nines of 36-39. He is tied for fourth with three other players. Erik Stoxen was a shot back at 76. Senior captain Jack Evans rounded out the scoring with a 78 to land in a tie for 14th.
The Warriors trail Alexandria by two strokes and lead third-place Moorhead by eight strokes.
"I think it's going to be a true battle to the finish," Warriors coach Brian Wallace said. "I think it will come down to just a few strokes. I think our boys are ready. I think they're well-prepared for the course. We just have a few things to clean up.

"I think our scores are going to go a lot lower Monday. I'm not sure what Alexandria's going to do. We can control how we play the course and do our best. I think we will come back Monday with a much better score."
Junior Danny Olson shot an 81 and Luke Anderson shot 94 for the Warriors, who will attempt to win the section Monday, June 4, in the final round at Rich Spring. The top six teams, and the top 48 individuals, advance to Monday's final round.
