Put any opponent on the power play 10 times and you're bound to pay-dearly.

The Roseau Rams made Brainerd pay Friday as they popped in four power-play goals and added a shorty as they skated to a 7-1 victory over the Warriors at Essentia Health Sports Center.

Alec Severson and Alex Verbout each provided two power-play scores for Roseau, which won its ninth straight game. Bryce Johnson supplied the short-handed score for the Rams, who outshot Brainerd 26-23 in a game between Section 8-2A foes.

Bryden Stoskopf accumulated four points for the Rams and Severson and Verbout each finished with three.

Brainerd was coming off a big 2-1 overtime victory over Bemidji at the Duluth Marshall Tournament, but fell behind Friday and the game snowballed out of its control.

"I thought we played well for stretches," Warriors head coach Dave Aus said, "but we just didn't bury it tonight. We didn't finish when we had chances to finish against a good team.

"I thought their goalie (Willie Woolever) played really well. We shot to his glove a lot. We knew this going in, and maybe we should have said this to the players, he's a lefty which maybe threw us off a little bit, but he did a good job."

Woolever finished with 23 saves as Roseau, ranked 19th in 2A by Let's Play Hockey, raised its section mark to 4-0 and its overall record to 9-3. Brainerd slipped to 3-3 and 7-5-1.

"Roseau's in the driver's seat now," Aus said. "We get to play them again (Jan. 27 at Roseau). I'm not saying we'll get them next time, but we get another chance. As long as we keep gathering wins, a loss or two is not going to kill us."

Following a scoreless opening period, Jack Evans put Brainerd ahead 1-0 with a power-play score at 5:14 of the second. The Rams then pumped in seven unanswered goals.

Bryce Johnson tied it 1-1. When a Warrior defender fell down, Jonah Huglen corralled the puck and dashed in alone on Brainerd goalie Colin Kleffman, who made a dandy save on Huglen's shot. Johnson secured the rebound and slapped it home for a short-handed marker at 7:25 of the second.

Brainerd's chances in the second were both on power plays. The Warriors' Riley Andres got off a laser that Woolever saved and Brady Anderson hit a post.

Severson, a defenseman, thrust Roseau into the lead at 11:50 of the second with a high wrister.

The third period got out of hand as Stoskopf stole the puck deep in the Brainerd zone, whirled and scored unassisted on a power play for a 3-1 edge.

Stoskopf set up a wide-open Verbout with a sharp pass at 6:45 of the third. Verbout's power-play slap shot off of a faceoff won by Stoskopf gave Roseau a 5-1 margin. Severson tallied during a 5 on 3 at 14:45. Brandon Lund capped the avalanche with 57 seconds remaining.

Brainerd has little time to regroup as it hosts Bloomington Jefferson at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7. The once mighty Jaguars have lost six straight and are 2-9-1 overall.

"That's what we said to these guys, that you've got to come back and get on the horse (Saturday)," Aus said. "The sun is going to come up. Sometimes when you lose these games they're good for you.

"We're pretty good, but we're not as good as we think we are. This is a good lesson. We've got guys crying and disappointed."
