ST. CLOUD — Brainerd’s relay teams shined at the Section 8-2A meet Saturday, March 13.

All three relay teams qualified for state, led by the 200 medley relay of Tristan Dawson, Parker Tatge, Cade Rosenwald and Thomas Ruhl who broke a school record in 1:35.82.

“We had a fantastic day,” Warriors head coach John Zemke said. “The kids were really lights out. The exchanges were right on and to get under 1:36 is great.”

Ruhl, Rosenwald and Tatge were joined by Mason Kuepers in the 200 free relay to swim a first-place, state-qualifying time in 1:26.32, also a school record.

“We got some guys who can sprint,” Zemke said. “It’s hard to turn kids into sprinters and our relay is sitting third in the state for relay times.”

The 400 free relay team of Ruhl, Rosenwald, Kuepers and Dawson also became state qualifiers with a second-place finish in 3:13.57.

Kuepers nearly missed out on the 200 free state time, but qualified for the 100 free in 48.19.

“He just missed the 200 free cut and had a great time,” Zemke said. “He made state in a couple events last year and to come back and make it in the 100 free is great.”

Ruhl scored a state-qualifying time in the 50 free in 21.72.

“50 is all about start, turn, finish,” Zemke said. “He really put together an excellent race and has been working on his start all year. He’s got a great streamline and a great stroke.”

Rosenwald kept his momentum going after a good butterfly fly in the 200 medley to qualify to state in the 100 butterfly in 50.84, which is a school record.

“We knew his 50 butterfly in the medley was fast,” Zemke said. “He just shattered the school record (in the 100 butterfly). This year, he is feeling healthy and is strong in the water.”

Dawson will make a return trip to state in the 100 backstroke as he swam a second-place time of 54.01.

Zemke said Dawson will look to improve his time for state.

“We are going to give him another week of rest and he’s excited to go back down there,” Zemke said. “He loves that pool.”

Not knowing the early times during the split section was tough, but Zemke said he had a stopwatch on the bus as he watched the other teams perform on YouTube.

“I knew about where everyone was when we got there,” Zemke said.

Having a successful section meet put the icing on the cake of a challenging season.

“Everyone was healthy and that kind of put the highlight on the meet,” Zemke said. “I’m excited to get down to state on Friday.”
