Brainerd's 400-yard freestyle relay moved up to 11th place while Peder Smith and the 200 medley relay finished 16th in the finals of the Class 2A state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center Saturday night.

Smith swam the 500 freestyle and was also on both relay teams along with David Supinski, Matt Majerle and Preston Owen.

In the 500 free, Smith was 3.7 seconds slower than Friday when he was in 15th place.

"I swam all out on Friday in the prelims because I knew I had to if I was going to have a chance at making it to Saturday," he said. "When I swam on Saturday, I was feeling a little tired, my legs especially, but I still tried to push as hard as I could.

"In the 200, I think we were all a little slow on our splits Saturday," he added. "We were a little disappointed, but our goal was to make it to the second day and we did that so we were happy."

The 200 relay was 16th in the prelims with a time of 1:40.26 and remained 16th in the finals with a slower 1:40.90.

The 400 relay swam a 3:15.84 on Saturday to finish 11th after sitting 12th after the prelims where they clocked a 3:16.32.

"We were pretty pumped in the 400," said Smith. "It was our very last race of the season and three of us had better splits than we did on Friday. Owen had a 49.3 on the anchor which is phenomenal for a freshman."

Brainerd head coach John Zemke added, "The 400 relay had a season best and we were able to move up, thanks mainly to Owen who had a lifetime best in his split. This was the first time he didn't have to come off (an individual) backstroke and had a great time for a freshman."

Supinski is the only senior of the four. Smith and Majerle are juniors who will return along with Owen in 2015-16.

"All in all it was a good season," said Zemke. "We were 6-2 in duals and managed to get four swimmers to state. Our section prelims and finals was the highlight of the year when every one of our kids swam season bests and dropped a lot of times from where we began at the start of the year."
