ST. CLOUD - Brainerd's Tanner Lundberg turned in a valiant effort to reach the finals of the Section 8-2A singles tournament Wednesday, but 81 games in 12 sets over four matches on the hottest day of the year took its toll leaving him third following a match for true second place.

The determined ninth-grader entered the tournament hoping to finish in the top four and opened with a marathon first-round match that lasted almost three hours before he finally defeated Becker's Josiah Borst 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3.

Less than 30 minutes later, he was back on the court defeating Bemidji's Matt Hokanson who hadn't been beaten all year, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

"Hokanson injured his right foot in the second set, but was able to still put up a good battle and it took a valiant effort by Tanner to win," said Brainerd coach Bruce Thompson.

"At this point Tanner had played six sets of tennis (and 56 games) on the hottest day this season with only a 30-minute break," Thompson added. "He was just out of gas for the final, feeling nauseous, and on the edge of heat exhaustion."

His tank was empty for the finals match where he was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by St. Cloud Tech's Lucas Conboy. Lundberg then had to play his fourth match of the day for true second losing 6-0, 6-1 to Dawson Brown of Becker.

"He was just a noodle the final two matches," said Thompson. "There was nothing left in his legs. His parents had him in the car before the final match trying to cool him down with air conditioning and ice.

"He left it all out on the court. To play that many games in four matches on the hottest day of the year, it just took it right out of him. Still, for a ninth-grader playing No. 1 singles, he had a great year."

Lundberg finishes with a 12-10 record having played mostly juniors and seniors throughout the year, according to Thompson.
