ST. CLOUD-Brainerd's Tanner Lundberg captured the Section 8-2A singles championship by cruising to three victories in Wednesday's section individual tournament at St. Cloud Apollo.
Lundberg opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nathan Maus of Monticello. In the semifinals, he beat Dylan Fyle of Monticello 6-2, 6-2. He then defeated Eric Inderieden of St. Cloud Tech 6-3, 6-0 for the title.
Lundberg (22-2) is the first Warrior singles player to advance to state since Paul Tuchscherer in 2002. Tuchscherer finished second in the section that year.
"He played well considering the conditions down there," Warriors coach Bruce Thompson said. "It rained some, then it stopped, then it was windy. The playing conditions were not ideal.
"His skill set is very good. He brings a different game, an interesting game plan, For a sophomore boy, he has a really good game. He's fun to watch. He competes well. He never gets shook."
In doubles Wednesday, Brainerd's teams of Travis Goeden-Cole Kalenberg and Happy Rivard-Garrett Goeden both lost first-round matches and did not advance.
Also in singles, Brainerd's Patrick Meyer finished fourth.
"Patrick had a good tournament," Thompson said. "He was down against (Peyton) Fischer from Willmar 0-4 in the third set. He wins the next six games to win 6-4."
