Brainerd lacrosse team lands in state consolation championship

Brainerd went 1-1 during the state lacrosse tournament Saturday and Sunday and was scheduled to play in the consolation championship game before rain prevented the game from being played.

Brainerd went 1-1 during the state lacrosse tournament Saturday and Sunday and was scheduled to play in the consolation championship game before rain prevented the game from being played.

Brainerd was scheduled to face Duluth in the final game of the season. Brainerd finished the season 6-5.

During the quarterfinal round, Brainerd rallied with four late goals, but landed in the consolation bracket after a 9-8 loss to St. Cloud North.

Scoring for the Warriors were Ruby Hopp with three goals and one assist, Tory Brown with three goals and Sydney Liebeg and Miranda Zilka with a goal each. Ciara Mitchell made 10 saves in net.

Brainerd bettered Red River Valley/Fargo 9-3 in the consolation semifinals. Hopp added four more goals and Brown two more. Morgan Larson, Ashten Austin and Tia McLean each scored a goal and Mitchell made 12 saves.

Hopp led the team this season with 36 goals and was followed by Tory Brown with 23, Miranda Zilka with 17, Tia McLean eight, Morgan Larson and Ciara Mitchell four, Mariah Lennander and Kalee Nelson with two and Madeline Pike, Ashten Austin and Sydney Liebeg with one.

Ciara Mitchell and Heather Smart combined in goal for the Warriors and together with strong defense from Morgan Larson and Madeline Pike, allowed the least amount of goals in NSLA league play.

The Warrior girls lacrosse team will return to the field next spring but will have several openings to fill as the team will graduate seniors Tory Brown, Miranda Zilka, Madeline Pike, Ashten Austin, Tia McLean, Ciara Mitchell and Sydney Liebeg.
