CAMP RIPLEY - Deployed service members of the Minnesota National Guard participated in the final Camp Ripley sponsored hunt for 2015.

"This hunt has always been one of the most relaxing and fun hunts we help put together," said Jason Linkert, event co-organizer.

The Minnesota Department of Military Affairs accepted hunt applications for the Camp Ripley and Arden Hills Army Training Site hunts from Minnesota residents who are current or retired military members or have served since 2001 for any of our nation's Armed Forces.

"We drew 60 names this year and had about 45 participants so far to go down range after checking in," added Linkert.

Every hunter receives a short briefing on the first day to orientate them to their individual hunting area, explain safety rules and allow them the opportunity to prepare necessary equipment.

"I really enjoyed being out there, even though I knew where the other guys were I had lots of room to move around," said Staff Sgt. Paul Grimm of the 1st Battalion-125th Field Artillery.

For Grimm, a three-time deployment veteran from 1st battalion-125th Field artillery, this was the second opportunity to take part in the hunt. This year he shot a nine-point, 151-pound buck north of the Hendrickson Impact Area on Camp Ripley.

"It was a fantastic time, I really enjoyed being out there," added Grimm.

Overnight, four other bucks came out of the Camp Ripley Training Area. Jon West of Sartell shot a nine-point, 168-pound buck; Sean Flahave of Royalton shot a 10-point, 160-poiund buck;

Adam Gulden of Pierz and Joseph Brenny of Sartell each shot seven-point bucks weighing 178 pounds and 150 pounds, respectively.

"There are a lot of deer moving around out there; it all depends on what shot works best for you," said Jake Kitzmann, natural resource manager at Camp Ripley.
