Logan Jackson knows his golf game.

The Pillager Huskies' senior knew the back nine of Pebble Creek Golf Club would give him trouble and it did Tuesday during the first round of the Class 1A state tournament.

Jackson fired a back nine 46, which he started on, but rallied for a 40 on the front for an 86. The first-year state tournament player is in 52nd place - 18 strokes out of first place which is held by freshman Brock Bliese of Mounds Park Academy.

But Jackson is only 10 shots out of the top 10 and that's his goal for Wednesday's final round.

"You definitely need to keep it in the fairways and that's the goal (Wednesday)," Jackson said. "You never know. If I get a good round going tomorrow and get into the mid-70s I could get right back in there and finish in the top 10. That's the game plan.

"My irons were really good today. Like usual, I relied on my mid irons and I played the par 3s the best if that's any indication of my game today. Other than that my putter really let me down. Hopefully (Wednesday) I can hit it closer and catch some breaks."

Jackson didn't card any birdies and opened with a double bogey, which he said was more nerves than anything.

"Once I got onto the front nine, I had a good run of pars and started putting better," he said. "I think I have a good feel for the greens now. They were a lot faster today than during our practice round Monday. Plus, they tucked some pins with a couple of double breakers. Today it was almost lag putting and then tap in for whatever."

Jackson tees off at 7:39 a.m. for Wednesday's final round.
