NORTH MANKATO-Andrea Semmler had two of the four hits for the Pine River-Backus Tigers in their 11-0 Class 1A state quarterfinal loss to Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian Thursday at Caswell Park.
The Tigers bounced back with a 5-4 10-inning win over Hayfield in the consolation semifinals and will play New York Mills at 9 a.m. Friday for the consolation title.
Against Hayfield, the Tigers scored four runs on four hits in the top of the 10th to snap a 1-1 tie.
With two outs, Bailey Wynn reached on an error, Brandi McAllister singled, Alyssa Semmler and Ashley Anderson hit RBI singles, Annie Semmler was hit by a pitch and Allison Anderson ripped a 2-run single.
A 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning by Maggie Streightiff left the Hayfield rally a run short.
The Tigers' Allison Anderson finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Brandi McAllister and Alyssa Semmler had two hits each. Andrea Semmler cranked a solo home run in the fifth for the other Tiger run.
Miah Hansen pitched all 10 innings against Hayfield striking out four and walking two while giving up 10 hits.
"Today was a great experience," said Tigers head coach John Riewer. "The second game we played like we were capable of playing and because of that we won. The first game we fell apart defensively and just didn't play the way we know we can."
In the quarterfinal game, Jenny Nelson hit two home runs and drove in three runs for Edgerton, which improved to 18-7.
Nelson hit a solo shot in the third and belted a 2-run blast in the fourth helping the Flying Dutchmen to a 6-run inning. Nelson's two-homer day tied a single-game tournament record for homers, set seven times before, including one other time Thursday.
She also joined 17 others who have hit two home runs in the tournament.
