Class 2A Gymnastics: Klefsaas finishes season at state

Millie Klefsaas of the Brainerd Warriors didn't have the best all-around day of her gymnastics career but she performed well in two events in the Class 2A state individual meet Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

Klefsaas, who attends Staples-Motley High School, scored a 9.5375 on vault, which had she qualified individually for that event would have placed her 13th.

"I over-rotated on my first (vault)," she said. "The second one I knew I could pull it out. I practiced it all week and I did it. I stuck it. It was probably my best vault of the season."

On floor, the sophomore scored 9.300, another event for which she didn't qualify individually but would have placed 22nd.

"I was first up on floor," Klefsaas said. "I was excited to go out there and start off our section well. I had a big cheering section. Floor has always been pretty consistent for me so I wasn't super nervous. I went out and thought I got a good score so I was happy with it."

Klefsaas, who finished 32nd in the all-around competition, has been returning to full strength after battling her way back from a concussion that she suffered in January.

"I was just glad I was able to compete," she said. "I didn't even know if I would be fully recovered by section or state. I was just glad to go to state and be there.

"It was not really my day. Everyone has a bad day. I was just glad I could be there."

Klefsaas competed first on beam followed by floor, vault and bars.

"She probably had one of her best vaults of the year," Warriors coach Dave Maras said,. "Her floor went very well. She had a couple falls on beam. She had an unfortunate thing happen on bars - she overshot her giant. She got back up to start again and nicked her feet on the bottom bar. It was a tough bar set.

"Otherwise I thought she competed real well. A fall on beam can happen to anyone. She came back strong the next two events but didn't finish where she would have liked."
