COON RAPIDS-Playing in his first state tournament, Brainerd ninth-grader Gavin Metz turned in a two-day total 167 that earned him a 77th-place finish in the Class 3A state tournament Wednesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.

Metz was tied for 62nd after an opening round of 42-41--83 that saw him having to finish the final six holes early Wednesday when severe weather halted play Tuesday. He completed Day Two with a 43-41-84.

"For his first of hopefully many appearances at that tournament, he played really hard," said Brainerd head coach Brian Wallace. "His score wasn't where he wanted, but he represented himself and the Brainerd school well and that's something to be proud of.

"The first round he had more trouble finding the fairway off the tees which translated into a few bogeys and today he had more trouble on the greens hitting some three-putts.

He's got three more years to give this another try. He has an amazing swing to build on and we look forward to what can happen in the next three years."
