ST. PAUL-Pierz Pioneers Jake Andres and Carson Huls and Little Falls senior Simon Bryce qualified for Saturday's consolation quarterfinals following the first day of matches in the Class 3A and 2A state individual tournaments Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.
Brainerd's only qualifier in the 3A tournament, senior Chad Orsburn at 113 pounds, lost a close 11-9 opening-round decision to Buffalo freshman Ryan Scherber and was eliminated when Scherber lost in the quarterfinals. Orsburn finishes the season with a 27-8 record.
Also in 3A competition, Bryce, ranked seventh, won his first match at 152 with a 16-1 technical fall at 4:37 before losing an 8-6 decision in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, he decisioned Hopkins' Demetrius Patton 5-1 and takes on Bemidji's 10th-ranked Chance Hinrichs in Saturday's consolation quarterfinals.
The Flyers' Gabe Nagel (145) and Sam Nagel (195) both suffered opening-round losses, but Gabe Nagel got into the wrestlebacks when his first-round opponent advanced to the semifinals. Gabe Nagel lost a 5-1 decision in the wrestlebacks and finishes with a 36-9 record.
Class 2A's seventh-ranked Andres pinned his opponent at 120 in the opening round before losing a 4-3 decision in the quarterfinals to No. 5 Justin Stauffacher from Scott West. In the wrestlebacks, Andres decisioned 10th-ranked Camron Wigand from South St. Paul 7-3 and will face Robby Horsman (Kasson-Mantorville) in the consolation quarterfinals.
Huls, who wasn't ranked, was decisioned 7-1 at 220 in the opening round by No. 2 Steven Hajas from Delano, but qualified for the wrestlebacks when Hajas moved on to the semifinals with a pin in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, Huls won a 6-4 sudden victory overtime decision to reach the consolation quarterfinals against Redwood-River Valley's 10th-ranked Kaleb Hasse
Unranked Brandon Tomala (145) of Pierz lost a 10-4 decision to eighth-ranked Miles Fitzgerald and was eliminated when Fitzgerald lost his quarterfinal match.
